Flame retardancy test of materials with horizontal combustion tester

Time: Author: SKYLINE Editor

The horizontal combustion tester is applicable to the measurement of relative combustion rate, flame retardance and horizontal combustion performance of various textile fabrics, clothing, tents, etc., especially automotive interior fabrics.

Test principle:

Hold the sample horizontally on the U-shaped support, ignite the free end of the sample with a specified height of flame in the combustion chamber for 15s, and determine whether the flame on the sample is extinguished, or when it is extinguished, as well as the burning distance of the sample and the time it takes to burn the distance.

Test steps:
1. Take out the pretreated sample, place the sample with fuzzing or tufting on the flat table, and comb it twice on the fuzzing surface along the opposite direction of the fuzz with a metal comb that meets the requirements.
2. Ignite the gas lamp when the air inlet of the gas lamp is closed, and adjust the flame according to the flame height sign plate to make the flame height 38 mm. Before starting a test, the flame shall burn stably for at least 1 min under this state, and then extinguish.
3. Mount the exposed face of the sample into the sample holder. Mount the specimen so that both sides and one end are clamped by the U-shaped bracket, and the free end is aligned with the opening of the U-shaped bracket. When the width of the sample is insufficient, the U-shaped support cannot hold the sample, or the free end of the sample is soft and easy to bend, which will cause unstable combustion, the sample shall be placed on the sample support with heat-resistant metal wire for combustion test.
4. Push the sample holder into the combustion chamber, and place the sample in the center of the combustion chamber in a horizontal position. Ignite the gas lamp when the air inlet of the gas lamp is closed, make the flame height 38 mm, make the free end of the sample in the flame for ignition for 15 s, and then extinguish the flame (close the gas lamp valve).
5. The flame burns forward from the free end of the sample, and the timing starts at the moment when the flame propagates through a line. Pay attention to observe the flame propagation on the side with faster combustion, and the timing shall be subject to the side with faster flame propagation.
6. When the flame reaches the second marking line or goes out before reaching the second marking line, the timing shall be stopped at the same time, and the timing shall also be subject to the side where the flame spreads faster. If the flame goes out before reaching the second marking line, measure the burning distance from the first marking line to the time when the flame goes out. The burning distance refers to the length of the burned part on the surface or inside of the sample.
7. If the non-exposed surface of the sample is cut, the timing shall be based on the flame propagation speed of the exposed surface.

8. The requirement of burning speed is not applicable to the surface formed by cutting the sample.
